what is adsorption?

Adsorption is a surface phenomenon of accumulation of molecules of a substance at the surface rather than in the bulk of a solid or liquid. In adsorption, the substance gets concentrated at the surface only. It does not penetrate through the surface to the bulk of the solid or liquid. For example, when a chalk stick is dipped into an ink solution, only its surface becomes coloured.

In most applicationsactivated carbon removes impurities from fluids, vapors or gasby a process calledadsorption. Adsorption is a surface phenomenon that results in the accumulation of molecules within the internal pores of an activated carbon. This occurs in pores slightly larger than the molecules that are being adsorbed, which is why it is very important to match the pore size of the activated carbon with the molecules you are trying to adsorb.
