WHAT IS alloying

When a metal is mixed with another element, which may be a metal or a non metal such that a new substance of homogeneous composition is obtained, it is known as alloying and the substance is known as an alloy. An alloy is thus a homogeneous mixture of two or more metals, or a metal and a non metal. The properties of an alloy are different from that of combining elements. For example when iron is mixed with nickel and chromium, stainless steel is obtained which is hard and does not rust.

Hence alloying is one of the methods for preventing corrosion.
