What is an absolute phrase

A phrase is a group of words. It is not complete in meaning like a sentence; and does not have both a subject and a finite verb like a sentence or a clause.

An absolute phrase modifies the whole sentence and not just one word. For example:

Wings flapping, the flock of birds rose into the sky.

The leader addressed the gathering, his face glowing with triumph.
