What is anions and cations?

Dear student

The atoms or molecules that possess a net negative charge ( mainly due to the fact that number of electrons are more than number of protons) are known as anions. e.g.  Cl- , F-, NO3-etc

On the contrary,
The atoms or molecules that possess a net positive charge( because the number of electrons are less than the number of protons) are known as cations.e.g. H+, Na+, Ca2+,NH4+etc

The positive charged ions are called Cations. Ex = Mg2+, Zn2+
The negative charged ions are called Anions. Ex = OH-, NO3-
