WHAT IS BACTERIAL TRANSFORMATION WITH FOREIGN DNA ???HOW CAN U SAY THAT PLASMIDS HELP IN BACTERIAL TRANSFORMATION WITH FOREIGN DNA ??

Dear student

Please refer the solution below for the said query

Transformation is the process through which a bacterial cell takes a naked foreign DNA from the environment or medium. This changes the genetic makeup of a cell.

Plasmids are commonly used as cloning vectors. They have the ability to replicate within the bacterial cells independent of the chromosomal DNA. The foreign DNA is linked to these plasmids by genetic engineering methods to create recombinant DNA/plasmid.

Bacterial cells are treated with divalent cations (e.g. Ca2+ ). Then, these cells are incubated with recombinant DNA/plasmid on ice, followed by heat shock (at 42º), and then putting them back on ice. By this, bacteria are able to take up recombinant DNA from the medium.

Hope this information clears your doubt about the topic.
