WHAT IS CISTRON ,MONOCISTRON ,POLYCISTRON
Dear student,
Cistron is a structural gene which encodes for a specific protein. These gene exhibit a specific behaviour in cis-trans test.

Monocistron is a segment of DNA or mRNA that codes for a single polypeptide. They are mainly present in eukaryotes.Monocistronic genes have two parts:
-
- Exon − Sequences that code for a particular character and is expressed in a matured and processed mRNA
- Intron − Interrupting sequences that do not appear in a mature and processed mRNA
Polycistron is basically the region of mRNA in prokaryotes which contain many reading frames that codes for proteins while monocistron occurs in eukaryotes in which single reading frame in mRNA codes for single polypeptide as their genome is very large.
