What is Conventional current?

Right before when electricity was discovered, It was assumed that the positive charge carriers(i.e. protons) cause the current to flow, so in that case the current flows out of the positive terminal through the circuit to the negative terminal of the source. This convention was assumed so it was called conventional current. It can also be defined as charge per unit time transported in a certain direction.
But further discoveries proved that current actually flows due to the negative charge carriers(i.e.electrons) which flow from the negative terminal to the positive terminal of the source, this concept of electric current is used more frequently these days.
