What is cultural or accelerated Eutrophication?

The nutrient enrichment of water bodies due to human activities such as passage of sewage, industrial effluents and run off from fertilized fields rich in nitrates and phosphates is called cultural eutrophication. Nutrients present in sewage, agricultural wastes and fertilizers cause dense growth of plants and planktonic algae. However, soon planktonic algae increase in number and impart a characteristic coloration to water. The excess growth of planktonic algae that causes coloration of water is called algal bloom. They are toxic to animals and humans.
