Doris Pearson's first reaction upon seeing her mother smoking and laying out cards on the table, was to be astounded. She was shocked to see her mother engaged in such activities and asked her what she was doing. Her mother's behaviour caught her by surprise because her orders of having the yellow silk ironed was not met by her mother. The moment she had entered the room, the first thing she did was order her mother. But her mother's refrain from doing so finally caught her attention.
