what is eating by formula in the chapter memories of childhood by zitkala-sa?
The narrator realised that one was to have his breakfast in a formulaic manner in 'the land of apples'. As soon as a loud bell rang for the breakfast, all were made to stand in a queue and march ahead towards the dining room. Then a small bell rang which meant that chairs were to be pulled out. The next bell was to make them sit on the chairs. The third bell signalled that they were to start eating with fork and knife. The narrator was so afraid of this 'eating by formula' that she began to cry.
