What is economic importance of fungi and algae?

Economic importance of Fungi are:-

  • Some fungi are saprophytic in nature i.e act as scavengers and carry out decomposition of dead plant and animal. This results in the release of carbondioxide which is used by plants to carry out photosynthesis.
  • Some species of fungi are useful in the production of antibiotics. For example- Peicillium notatum is used for the production of antibiotic penicillium.
  • Few fungi are the edible thus, good source of food . For example- mushroom.

Economic importance of algae:-

  • Due to high content of  nitrogen,phosphorous & many other nutrients, it is used as manure at different places.
  • In somes countries , algae is consumed as  food.
  • As they are photosynthetic, it contributes  large amount of oxygen  in atmosphere.

A lichen is made up of a fungus and an alga living together. An alga is a simple plant with no roots, stems, or leaves. Being green in colour the alga makes its own food and shares it with the fungus. The fungus absorbs water and minerals from the surroundings and also protects the alga.
