Ectopic means “out of place”. So, ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy complication in which the egg gets implanted outside the uterine cavity (i.e. not at the normal place). In 95% of such complications the egg gets implanted in the fallopian tube. The implantation may take place in ovary, cervix or the abdomen also.

Neither these places are able to nurture the developing embryo as the uterus do nor they have enough space to provide for development. As the fetus grows, it will eventually burst the organ that contains it. This can cause severe bleeding and endanger the mother's life. An ectopic pregnancy does not turn into a live birth.
