# What is erect , inverted , virtual and real image ? What is the difference between all these and how can we observe them ?

Erect = Rigidly upright or straight

Invertedto reverse in position, order, or relationship or to turn inside out or upside down

Virtual =  An optical image formed from the apparent divergence of light rays from a point, as opposed to an image formed from thier actual divergence.

Real image a real image is a representation of an object

Erect means upright.Virtual means that cannot be formed on a screen.The image formed by a plane mirror is erect and virtual.

Real image is one that can be formed on a screen.Eg, a projector in cinemas.

REAL IMAGE : an image which can be formed on screen . generally formed by curved mirrors . the reflected rays meet without extending

INVERTED IMAGE : the image formed is when upside down

VIRTUAL IMAGE : an image which is formed behind the mirror by extending the rays .

ERECT IMAGE : an image which is not upside down or is straight

Describing Images Made From Mirrors and Lenses

Types Images
Images can be one of two types. First it can be real or virtual. This describes whether the image can be projected onto a screen, or can be seen only with your eye.
 Real Image: If the rays of light cross when drawing your ray diagrams then the image is real. This image can be projected onto a screen and be seen. An example of this is the image produced by the lens on an overhead projector.

 Virtual Image: A virtual image is an image where the rays of light do not cross and must be traced back to the other side of the lens or mirror. The point at which these lines meet is where the observer will believe the image is located. The image does not really exist and can not be projected onto a screen. An example of this is the image produced when looking through a magnifying glass.

Size of Image

The second way of describing an image involves relating the size of the image to the size of the original object. If an image is smaller than the original object it is called diminished and if it is larger it is called magnified.

 Diminished Image: If the image produced is smaller than the original object, the image is called dimished. An example of this is an object placed far from a convex lens.

 Magnified Image: If the image is larger than the original object it is called magnified. An example of this is an object that is placed very close to a convex lens. (inside the focal point) This is why convex lenses are used for "magnifying glasses". These two diagrams also demonstrate why the magnifying glass needs to be close to the object being viewed.

Orientation of Image

The last way to describe an image is to describe its orientation with respect to the original object. If the image is produced on the same side of the principal axis it is said to be erect, if the image is formed on the opposite side of the principle axis it is said to be inverted.

 Inverted Image: If the image is formed on opposite side of the principle axis as the object it is said to be inverted. All real images formed by lenses or mirrors are inverted. The reason your overhead projector projects its image onto a flat mirror before projecting it onto a screen is to flip the image - making it "right side up" to you the observer. It is also possible for virtual images to be inverted.

 Erect Image: If the image is formed on the same side of the principal axis as the object it is said to be erect. This happens for virtual images produced by lenses and mirrors, but not all virtual images will be erect.

It usually appears INVERTED (depends on the type of mirror e.g convex, concave)
It can be OBTAINED ON A SCREEN
In case of mirror, the image lies in front of the reflecting surface.
In case of lens, the image lies on the other side of the object.

The light rays meet at a focal point in front of the mirror

Virtual

It usually appears ERECT
It CANNOT be obtained on a screen
In case of a mirror, the image lies behind the mirror
In case of lens, the image lies on the same side of the object
The light rays meet at a focal point behind the mirror
