what is esterification reaction ?

Esterification is the reaction in which a Carboxylic acid combines with an alcohol in the presence of little concentrated sulphuric acid to form an ester. The esters so formed are pleasant smelling.

For example, Esterification of acetic acid in excess methanol (possibly as the solvent) in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid results in an ester (methyl acetate) with the removal of water molecule.

Esterification of Butyric acid in excess ethanol (possibly as the solvent) in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid results in an ester (ethyl butyrate) with the removal of water molecule.
