What is frankel defect. ..?

when an atom from the lattice comes and sits in an intestitial space, it is called frenkel defect.
eg. AgCl, AgBr.

Frenkel defect:

In this defect, some cations dislocate from their original sites and occupy interstitial sites. Therefore this is also a dislocationed defect / vacancy defect & interstitial defect.

Conditions:
  1. The sizer of cations and anions are different.
  2. This is found in those ionic crystals where coordination number is low.
examples: AgCl, AgBr, AgI, ZnS

Effects:
  1. No change in density.
  2. Electrical conductivity increases.
  3. Entropy increases.
  4. Stability of crystal decreases.
  5. Dielectric property of the crystal increases, because similar charges come near to each other.

Some particles are delocalised from their lattice point and occupy the voids of the lattice
lattice is electrically neutral &there is no change in observed and calculated density

defect in the lattice crystal where an atom or ion occupies a normally vacant site other than its own. As a result the atom or ion leaves its own lattice site vacant.

Frenkel defect is also known as interstecial site defect...In this defect the cations leave there space and goes to the interstecial sites or holes or space ...because of the small size of the cations....these decreases the density and also decreases the thermal stability....

mostly cation leaves their own position and occupies the interstitial sites, called as the frankel defect.ex.zns
