haplontic

  • dominant photosynthetic phase is gametophyte.
  • sporophytic generation is represented by one celled zygote.
  • eg - volvox,spirogyra

diplontic

  • dominant photosynthetic phase is sporophyte.
  • gametyophytic generation is represented by the single to few celled gametophyte.
  • eg - gymnosperm & angiosperm

Haplontic life cycle- a life cycle in which haploid phase (gametophyte phase) is dominant, free living and photosynthetic. sporophyte is represented by one-celled zygote. Zygote undergoes meiotic division to produce spores, which divide mitotically and form gametophyte.

Example - Algae such as Spirogyra.

Diplontic life cycle - a life cycle in which diplod phase (sporophyte phase) is dominant, free living and photosynthetic. Gametophyte is single to few-celled. Example − All seed-bearing plants, gymnosperms, and angiosperms, some algae-like Fucus.
