Hybridization is the intermixing of  orbitals to form new hybrid orbitals( by hybrid we mean that in normal condition orbitals have different energies and different shapes but when they undergo hybridization they acquire energy, shapes and sizes which are not the same as they have in their unhybridized or normal states) which are suitable for the pairing of electrons to form chemical bonds in valence bond theory. Hybridization tells us about the geometry.shape and size of the new molecule formed.Also note that it is not necessary that all hybridized orbitals undergo bond formation. Also the orbitals hybridising is equal to the number of hybridized orbitals formed.
