Imprest system of Petty Cash: It is the system under which, an estimate is made of amount for petty expenses fort a period (it could be for a week, a fortnight or a month). the estimated amount is given to the Petty Cashier in the beginning of period. The mount paid by him during the period for expenses. In the beginning of  new period, a fixed amount will be reimbursed again.
This system of paying advance in the beginning and reimbursing the amount spent from time to time is called Imprest System of Petty Cash.

The base characteristic of an imprest system is that a fixed amount is reserved, which after a certain period of time or when circumstances require, because money was spent, it will be replenished. This replenishment will come from another account source e.g. petty cash will be replenished by cashing a cheque drawn on a bank account.
