What is inactivity of animals in summer?

In summer season some animals like snails, fishes etc become inactive and go to dormancy period to avoid the high temperatures and dryness of summers.This phenomenon is known as aestivation. The animals becomes inactive to save themselves from heat and dehydration. The metabolic rate slows down during this period.
