What is India's foreign policy after Independence? (Write about Non-Aligned Movement)
The period after the second world war saw the rise of two power blocs- US and USSR and the emergence of Cold war between them which was an ideological warfare between the two, with both countries extending their influence by forming alliances. India, in such a scenario, which had just gained independence from the colonial yoke, thus declared to follow an Independent foreign policy and adopted a policy of Non Alignment with either of the power blocs.
India's Reasons for Non Alignment
a. India felt aligning with any of the power blocs would aggravate international tension, rather than promote peace. Therefore, a policy of non alignment would help in reducing tension and would prevent the outbreak of another war.
b. A newly independent country, India did not want to part with its independent sovereign status and wanted to take independent decisions.
c. A policy of non alignment was in tune with India's traditional policy policy of tolerance, peace and harmony.
d. India wanted to play a pro active role in maintaining international peace and security.
Thus. non alignment formed the bedrock of our foreign policy.
India, declared the following aspects of Non alignment which were:
a. It is an independent foreign policy and is anti-military alliances.
b.It does not favour the inception of military basis on Indian soil or in any other non-aligned country.
c.It caters to the concept of World Peace.
d.It stands for friendly relations with all nations.
e.Non alignment does not mean being neutral or isolation from World Affairs. It means playing an active role in mediating between the power blocs.
