What is latitudinal expansion of India?

Dear Student,
Latitudes are the imaginary lines drawn on the globe which are full circles and run in east-west direction. It has three parts :- Equator, Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. Equator is the most important latitude among them. Equator divides the globe into two equal halves : Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere.
  • Tropic of Cancer divides our country India into almost two equal halves.
  • India is in Northern Hemisphere. It extends between 8°4′N to 37°6′N. Its southern extent is 8°4′N and northern extent is 37°6'N. It is important to note that Letter N is used after northern and southern extent. It is so because, India is in Northern Hemisphere
  • The North-South extent is 3214 km. in India. As Tropic of Cancer passes through 8 states :- Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram, respectively.
  • The time lag between Gujarat and Arunanchal Pradesh is 2 hours.

Dear student
  • India is located in the northern hemisphere of the world.
  • The Tropic of Cancer (23°30’N) passes almost halfway through the country India. It is North from the Equator, that passes through the middle of India. The Tropic of Cancer passes through eight states in India
  • From the extends south to north, the mainland of India extends between 8°4’N and 37°6’N latitudes.
  • From the other extends west to east, India extends between 68°7’E and 97°25’E longitudes.
  • The distance between latitudes remain the same throughout but the distance between the two longitudes reduces as moved towards poles
The distance between two latitudes is constant that is 111 km but the distance between two longitudes is 111 km at the equator and reduces to 0 at the poles.
  • Due to the great longitudinal extent and difference of about 29°, there are wide differences in local time of places located at two extreme points of the country.
  • The difference between these two points would be approximate of about two hours.

India lies to the north of the equator between 6° 44′ and 35° 30′ north latitude .
  • The latitudinal extent of India from the north end Kashmir to south end Kanniyakumari is 37°6′N to 8°4′N
  • India is located in the northern hemisphere of the world.
