What is loam and why is it considered to be the best topsoil for growing plants?
Loam is a type of soil composed of sand, silt and clay in somewhat equal proportions. Due to the variations in these individual components loam soil can be further divided as sandy loam, silty loam, clay loam, sandy clay loam and silty clay loam. Loam soil is considered best topsoil for growing plants as it has better infiltration of water and air than silty soil, contains more nutrients and humus (required for plant growth) than sandy soils and are better and easily tilled than clay soils.
