what is maximum refractive index to get an emergent ray from an equilateral prism.

We know that in case of refraction through an equilateral prism:     μ = sin60°+2sin60°2=sin30°+2sin30°or      μ2=sin30°+2Differentiating above eqn with respect to , we get:       12 dμd=cos30°+2×12In order to have maximum refractive index  dμd=0Therefore    cos30°+2=0=cosπ2or             30°+2=π2or               /2 =π/2-30°=60°Therefore         μ  =sin30°+2sin30°=sin30°+60°sin30°==sin90°sin30°or                  μ = 11/2=2So the maximum refractive index of the prism must be 2 to have emaergent ray through the prism.
