What is mean and median? How to find them? what is difference between them

mean and median are used in statistics, a branch in maths.

they can be found by

MEAN = sum of all the values in a given set of data / number of values.

for example.........

in this set of data; 1,2,3,4,5,6
the mean is         1+2+3+4+5+6 / total number of count
                            i.e  1+2+3+4+5+6 / 6
                                  = 21/6 = 3.5 (in decimal).

MEDIAN is the "middle" value in the list of numbers.

to find the median, your numbers have to be listed in numerical order (ascending or descending).

for example..............

in this set of data; 1,4,3,6,2,5,7
arranging it in ascending order, we get,
                               1,2,3,4,5,6,7
median is 4 as it's the middle value.

this set of data has only odd number of values, so it's easy to find the median.

but when it comes to even number of values ,
like here
 -1,2,3,4,5,6

we need to add the 2 middle numbers - here it's 3 and 4........3+4=7
and then divide the sum by 2 to find the value halfway between them - 7/2 = 3.5
so the median here is 3.5 .

the difference between them are:
  • A mean is found by adding up all the values and dividing that score by the number of values.

  • The Median is the number found at the exact middle of the set of values. A median can be found by listing all numbers in ascending or descending order and then locating the number in the centre of that set of data.

  • The mean is the arithmetic average of a set of numbers, or distribution.

  • Median is defined as the middle number in an ordered list of values.
