# What is mean and median? How to find them? what is difference between them

*mean and median are used in statistics, a branch in maths.*

*they can be found by*

**MEAN = sum of all the values in a given set of data / number of values.**

for example.........

in this set of data; 1,2,3,4,5,6

the mean is 1+2+3+4+5+6 / total number of count

i.e 1+2+3+4+5+6 / 6

= 21/6 = 3.5 (in decimal).

**MEDIAN is the "middle" value in the list of numbers.**

to find the median, your numbers have to be listed in numerical order (ascending or descending).

for example..............

in this set of data; 1,4,3,6,2,5,7

arranging it in ascending order, we get,

1,2,3,

**4**,5,6,7

median is 4 as it's the middle value.

*this set of data has only odd number of values, so it's easy to find the median.*

but when it comes to even number of values ,

like here-1,2,

but when it comes to even number of values ,

like here

**3,4**,5,6

we need to add the 2 middle numbers - here it's 3 and 4........3+4=7

and then divide the sum by 2 to find the value halfway between them - 7/2 =

**3.5**

so the median here is 3.5 .

*the difference between them are:*

- A mean is found by adding up all the values and dividing that score by the number of values.

- The Median is the number found at the exact middle of the set of values. A median can be found by listing all numbers in ascending or descending order and then locating the number in the centre of that set of data.

- The mean is the arithmetic average of a set of numbers, or distribution.

- Median is defined as the middle number in an ordered list of values.
