Buried means placed underground below the soil.
For example, several years ago, many plants and animals were buried underground, due to geological processes like lanslides, volcanoes, tectonic plate movements etc.
These plants and animals were subjected to immense heat and pressure and their bodies were converted into fossil fuels like coal and petroleum that we use today as conventional sources of energy.
Thus something which is hidden or placed inside the soil is buried.
