what is meant by turgidity of cell
Turgor Pressure or turgidity is the main pressure of the cell contents against the cell wall in plant cells and bacteria cells, determined by the water content of the vacuole, resulting from osmotic pressure, i.e. the hydrostatic pressure produced by a solution in a space divided by a semi-permeable membrane due to a differential in the concentration of solute.
Turgor Pressure is also a force per unit area exerted outward on a plant cell wall by the water contained in the cell vacuole. In terms of plant water potential, turgor pressure is usually expressed as the pressure component (Ψp). This force gives the plant rigidity, and keeps it erect.
More or less, it's how stiff/inflated a cell is with water. Plant cells can become turgid as their strong cell walls prevent them from bursting. However, if too much water enters animal cells, they burst as they are not surrounded by a strong cell wall. These cannot become turgid.
