What is migrationa nd it's significance?

Dear Student,

Birds and animals sometimes travel long distances from their habitat,  to overcome unfavourable conditions during some seasons. This movement might also be a part of life cycle of some birds. This movement of animals and birds over long distances, in large numbers is called as migration. For example, Siberian crane migrate to India in large numbers, during winter to escape harsh, cold winter conditions.
Consequences: Migration is seen to have both positive as well as negative consequences. The individuals migrating to the more developed regions experience better overall standard of living and social well-being. They also add to the economic growth and development of the region. The individuals in the native region also benefit on account of remittances from the emigrants. However, the native region faces negative consequences on account of "brain drain". Another negative consequence of migration is the additional social burden on the region towards which the migration takes place.
