What is mucosa ?
Dear Student,
Mucosa (mucous membrane) is an epithelial membrane containing mucosal cells that secrete mucus, a gel-like fluid containing mainly water, mucins , inorganic salts, proteins, lipids, and mucopolysaccharides. They have a deep layer of connective tissue below the epithelial membrane(epithelial cells).
Mucosa (mucous membrane)- this lines body cavities and canals that lead to openings, mainly the respiratory, digestive, and urogenital tracts, namely, the mouth, nose, eyelids, trachea (windpipe) and lungs, stomach and intestines, and the ureters, urethra, and urinary bladder.
Mucous membranes and the mucous they secrete serve primarily for protection and lubrication. For instance, particulate matter and pathogens (disease-causing organisms) become trapped in secreted mucus, preventing their entry into deeper tissues. They also help in keeping the tissues moist.
