Osmosis is defined as a process by which the solvent molecules tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from an area of less concentration to an area of higher concentration.

Osmosis is responsible for several vital functions in plants:
  • Large quantities of water is absorbed by root and root hair from the soil by osmosis
  • Osmosis is responsible for movement and distribution of water across the cells of the plant.
  • Opening and closing of stomata
  • Maintaining the shape and size of various plant cells
  • Mechanical strength
