what is percentage saturation of heamoglobin with oxygen.?can u explain in simple terms?

  • It is the relationship between the percentage saturation of the haemoglobin in the blood and oxygen.

  • Oxygen saturation is the amount of oxygen that is dissolved in a given medium. In this case blood is oxygenated in the lungs, where oxygen molecules travel from the air and into the blood. Oxygen saturation, measure the percentage of hemoglobin binding sites in the bloodstream occupied by oxygen.
  • Haemoglobin is 97% saturated with oxygen as it leaves the pulmonary capillaries. The blood which has returned from peripheral tissues to the lungs and enters the pulmonary capillaries only 70% saturated with oxygen.

The saturation should be above 90% in normal arterial blood. A totally healthy person will have 95-100% saturation.
