pH paper is an indicator, which ranges from pH value 0 to 14. The following figure illustrates the various colours of the paper at different pH values.

It gives the following information

  • pH range 0 - 6.9 - acidic solutions

  • pH range 7.1 - 14 - basic solutions

  • pH value 7 - neutral solution

A pH indicator is a halochromic chemical compound that is added in small amounts to a solution so that the pH (acidity or basicity) of the solution can be determined visually. Hence a pH indicator is a chemical detector for hydronium ions (H3O+) or hydrogen ions (H+) in the Arrhenius model.
