What is ratio and percentage?

A ratio is a comparison of two quantities of the same kind with same units by dividing first quantity by the second. If a and b are two quantities of the same kind, then the fraction $\frac{a}{b}$ is called the ratio of a to b. It is written as a: b.

Example:

Ratio between 15 kg and 20 kg = 15 kg: 20 kg = $\frac{15}{20} = \frac{3}{4} = 3 : 4$

Ratio between 30 cm and 2 m = 30 cm : 200 cm $= \frac{30}{200} = \frac{3}{20} = 3 : 20$

Percentage is a number as a fraction of 100. It is denoted by % sign.

For example, $\frac{45}{100} = 45 %$
