What is regeneration ? Give one example of an organism that shows this process and one organism that does not. Why does regeneration not occur in the latter ?

Dear student,

Regeneration is the type of asexual reproduction. It is the growth of an organism from a part of the body. It is a power or ability of a living organism to re-grow the part of the body that gets broken off or cut. When it has involvement with asexual reproduction, then the broken part regenerate into new individual of the same type.

Hydra exhibits Morphallaxis : type of regeneration.

In this type of regeneration the lost part is replaced by the change in the tissues present in the lost part and each injured part forms a complete organism.

Epimorphosis:  is another type of Regeneration:

In this type of regeneration stem cells migrate to the injured part of the body and then divide further to reform only the injured or lost body part. Only lost part is reformed by the migration of stem cells. Whole organism is not reformed in this type of regeneration. Example: Lizard

it is a process in which micro organism get back their body parts , its example is Planaria . Amoeba does not show this process .

Regeneration is a process in which a fully differentiated organism give rise to a new organism from its broken or cut body parts .
complex multicellular organisms such as human beings and other animals cannot regenerate because they are not just a random collection of cells and different cells are specialised for different purposes . Specific organs reproduce here .
Hence cell by cell division (regeneration) is impractical in the latter oraganisms
