A root like stem, commonly horizontal in position that usually produces roots below and sends up shoots progressively from the upper surface from its nodes.

Also called rootstalk, rootstock. Serving as a reproductive structure. Example - Ginger, iris, and violets have rhizomes.

Thus,  rhizome is a stem.
