What is single cell protein? What is its significancs?

Dear Student
Single cell protein refers to the dried microbial cells which can be used as a food supplement for humans or animals. These are the complete proteins extracted from the pure cell culture of algae, bacteria, filamentous fungi or yeasts which on consumption, provides the individual with the right quantity of proteins and nutrients required for its growth and survival.

These microorganisms utilize carbon dioxide and energy from inexpensive livestock and produce biomass and leads to the concentration of protein. Thus, these micro-organisms acts as protein concentrates which can be used as food and protein supplements. For example:  Spirulina.
