A solstice is the day, when the midday sun shines vertically over head at one of the tropics (the Tropic of Cancer or the Tropic of Capricorn). During this time the duration of the day is the longest in the hemisphere. There are two solstices.

A) Summer Solstice:

  • The North Pole is inclined towards the Sun while the South pole is away from it.
  • The rays of the Sun falls vertically over Tropic of Cancer.
  • Days are longer and nights are shorter in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Places in Northern Hemisphere experiences summer season.
  • The longest day and shortest night is on 21st June.
B) Winter Solstice: 
  • The South Pole is inclined towards the Sun while the North pole is away from it.
  • The rays of the Sun falls vertically over Tropic of Capricorn.
  • Days are longer and nights are shorter in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • Places in Southern Hemisphere experiences summer season.
  • The longest day and shortest night is on 22nd December.
