what is split-gene arrangement?

Split gene are also known as interrupted gene, is a gene that contains two sections of DNA, one containing exon (that codes for a protein) and the other is introns (which do not express). This arrangement of gene in exons and introns is called split gene arrangement.

During transcription in Eukaryotes, introns are spliced. The exact function of introns is unknown. But possibly, introns in an hnRNA maybe spliced differently to produce similar but different polypeptides after translation. There for one gene may code for two or more proteins. Eg: the calcitonin gene. This is called split gene arrangement
