What is subsistence crisis??

Dear student,

Here is the answer:

Subsistence crisis is generally caused by economic factors. It is an extreme situation wherein it is very difficult to maintain even the basic means of livelihood.
During the old regime in France the situation became worse when the population of France grew from 23 million to 28 million. The increase in population led to increase in demand of food grains. But the production of food crops failed to meet the ever increasing demand. Most workers worked as labourers in workshops and their wages were fixed. The rise in prices widened the gap between the rich and the poor. Situation became worse at the time of drought or crop failure. This led to subsistence crisis.
