What is sympatheticoadrenal system?

Sympathetic nervous system and adrenal medulla work in close relation to each other and thus form a system called sympatheticoadrenal system. Adrenal medulla is stimulated by signal carried by sympathetic nerves to secrete hormones  . They both work in an integrated  system in order to provide the body with more energy in times of stress.

Adrenal medulla releases a class of hormones called catecholamines. These are also called emergency hormones or 'Flight or Fight hormones' because they deal with short term response to stress. The two catecholamines are epinephrine or adrenalin and norepinephrine or noradrenalin. They increase alertness, heart beat and respiration rate..They also stimulate the breakdown of glycogen resulting in an increased concentration of glucose in blood.
