Pictographs

A Pictograph is a way of showing data using images.

Each image stands for a certain number of things.

Example: Apples Sold

Here is a pictograph of how many apples were sold at the local shop over 4 months:

Pictograph

Note that each picture of an apple means 10 apples (and the half-apple picture means 5 apples).

So the pictograph is showing:

  • In January 10 apples were sold
  • In February 40 apples were sold
  • In March 25 apples were sold
  • In April 20 apples were sold

It is a fun and interesting way to show data.

But it is not very accurate: in the example above we can't show just 1 apple sold, or 2 apples sold etc.

Hi

Tally Chart:- A table that uses tally marks to record data.
Pictograph:-  A pictograph is an ideogram that conveys its meaning through its pictorial resemblance to a physical object. Earliest examples of pictographs include ancient or prehistoric drawings or paintings found on rock walls. Pictographs are also used in writing and graphic systems in which the characters are to considerable extent pictorial in appearance.

A method of counting frequencies, according to some classification, in a set of data. One line on a sheet of paper is assigned to each category or number, in the case of a discrete random variable, or class, in the case of grouped data. The data set is then worked through, and each item is represented by a vertical stroke on the corresponding line. For ease of counting, every fifth observation is represented by a diagonal line crossing the previous four to make a five-barred gate. Tally charts are often used with grouped observations.
