Patol Babu, whose original name was Sitalakanto Ray, was a 52-year old, short and bald headed man. he had been a famous stage actor when he used to live in Kanchrapara. Then he shifted to Nepal Bhattacharji Lane, in Calcutta when he was offered a job in Hudson and Kimberley(around 1934). He was in  his boss's good books, and worked there with punctuality. Then he was rendered jobless due to retrenchment in 1943. Patol Babu had to struggle for living ever since then. He opened a variety store, and had to wind it up in 5 years. Then he got a job in a Bengali firm, which he left due to his boss's attitude. Then he worked as an insurance salesman for 10 years. He was currently a scrap iron dealer. When Nishikanto Ghosh told him about a pedestrian's role in a Baren Mullick film, he was overjoyed and even started exaggerating a bit to his wife. He seems to have a good memory, as he could recall some of his better parts even 20 years later after he had left stage-acting. On seeing his dialogue "Oh", he was angered and decided to abandon the film-scene. But he remembered his mentor Gogon Pakrashi's advice and went ahead to shoot the scene. He put up a lot of efforts and perfection to shoot the scene exactly in the desired way. Everyone around the scene commended his short act of just colliding with Chanchal Kumar, the hero. He believed that immense dedication and satisfaction was much more than the payment for acting, and left for home without being paid for his acting.

Patol babu was a meticulous and a hardworking individual. He believed that even a minor role should be delivered with utter devotion ,in a manner that will be completely convincing. He practised numerous ways of uttering that small word, “oh”. He believed that no work is small or big, and if done with total dedication is actually worth one’s effort. While practising the role he was reminded of his Guru’s words, who had said that every role in acting should be delivered in a way which is completely natural and convincing. Therefore, every kind of work should be done as if it is a form of worship.

But then he came to Calcutta and served a British company with loyalty and punctuality till he was retrenched in 1943. He did different jobs, opened a shop, sold insurance and dealt in scrap iron but without much success. This phase of his life shows that he is honest, hard working and sincere. when the offer for a small walk- on role with a single word 'oh ' as his dialogue comes, the actor in him awakens once again and he performs even this tiny role with meticulous care and sincerity. He recalls the advice of his mentor, Mr Pakrashi, that no role, no dialogue is too small for an actor who must put his heart and soul into it. He performs his small role with perfection and feels pride and satisfaction in his work, which is a reward much bigger than any money. This shows that Patol Babu was a true actor, thorough in his preparation and sincere in his performance

He realized what was more important and acted for his own satisfaction. In the end he was contented with his performance and went away happy without collections his morning. Patol Babu was a modest, talented and timid man. He was an artist at heart — emotional, talented but too prone to being hurt. He was full of dramatic skills and could deliver powerful dialogues. He had been a great hit, doing theatre for ‘jatras’ and people specially flocked to see him. He was a perfectionist and packed in a very powerful performance for his minuscule role. His ‘Oh!’ had modulation of voice, body language and great dramatic skills. He was most emotional and felt really hurt to see the neglect in the eyes of the director. Patol babu is an ideal artist who is not wordly wise and a dreamer who is not practical.

Patol Babu was a man who once was known for his talent in acting, and there was a time when people particularly came to see the show just because Patol Babu was in it. at first he felt discriminated when his script all he had to  say was just "oh" but later he realises hi guru Pakrashi's words and  without making the role sound too low for him he finally acts and surprisingly he does not take the money, this shows that a word of praise was more than the money offered to him he feels satisfied and leaves without taking money,

Patol Babu, Film Star’ by Satyajit Ray, is the story of an
unassuming, humble, and modest man. He is a 52 year old man who gets an offer
to play an insignificant role of a pedestrian in a film. He gets really very
excited about his role. However, when he reaches the shooting scene for
enacting his role, he is disappointed to know the insignificance and shortness
of his scene. He is assigned the role of a pedestrian who is to bump into the
hero and just exclaim the word ‘Oh!’ He wants to get away from the scene. He
does not want to play such a small role.

However, he is a passionate actor who reveres acting and stage. He remembers his mentor, Guru, Gogon Pakrashi’s words. He had told him many years ago that he must never refuse any role, however small it might be. As an artist his aim should always be to make the most of the opportunity, and squeeze the last drop of meaning out of his lines. Remembering his Guru’s words, Patol Babu resolves to give his best to the small role offered to him. He rehearses it many times, infusing different shades of emotions into the word ‘oh’. This shows he is very meticulous.  At last the scene is shot, and everyone appreciates his acting. Finally, he leaves the shooting scene modestly, without even receiving his payment.

The values that we learn from his character is positive attitude, taking every opportunity in life earnestly, giving hundred percent from our side in spite of unfavourable circumstances and maintaining composure in provoking and difficult situations,
