What is the difference between a coil and a solenoid

A solenoid is a cylindrical coil of wire acting as a magnet when carrying electric current . It produces a magnetic field once current is passed through the wire.

The magnetic field is strongest inside the coil and at the ends, but the field is weakest outside the coil.

no but the book say's by increasing no. of turns the magnitude of magnetic feild will increase

are'nt they both the same ??

A solenoid is a coil wound in the shape of a helix. That is, like a helical spring. The wire used for making solenoid will be insulated wire. So, there is no particular difference between them.

Coil

Solenoid

Coil is the wounded length i.e. if we wound length of anything in series of concentric circles or rings. In making of bell we wound a wire in sequence of rings around cylindrical rods of iron.

A solenoid is an electrical component constructed by winding a long insulated wire in the form of a tightly packed helix.

A coil is a wire which is bend in shape of circle.

While solenoid is also a wire but with many coils (that means like spring) this wire is made of copper and is insulated and wrapped in the shape of a cylinder.

And that this coil and solenoid do not produce the same form of magnetic field. And that the magnetic field produced by a solenoid is similar to the magnetic field produced by bar magnet.(as it has two poles north and the south pole).

I hope that it will help!
