What is the Difference between Alkaline and basic?

Alkaline basically refers to an aqueous solution or aqueous medium whose pH is more than 7. These solutions are formed when an alkali (water soluble base) is dissolved in water. 

However, it is not necessary that all bases will dissolve in water. Some bases are soluble in water, some are insoluble in water. The water soluble bases are known as alkalies. Therefore, while alkaline medium means a basic medium, a basic medium does not always mean an alkaline medium.

all alkalines are soluble in water but all bases are not soluble in water they may or may not be soluble

There is no difference between alkaline and basic because all compounds having pH greater than 7 are considered as alkaline or basic because both are the names given to a same property.

  • Alkaline is the basic nature of a compound.
  • Alkali are the bases soluble in water.
