what is the difference between asleep and sleep

Dear Student,

The word 'sleep' means slumber, a state of inactivity or rest. It is used both as a noun and a verb.
Eg. When was the last time you got a good night's sleep? (used as a noun)
She has been sleeping for over 10 hours. (used as a verb)

However, the word 'asleep' describes the activity of sleeping, used as an adjective and an adverb.
Eg. The baby soon fell asleep

When using 'sleep', we refer to the gradual process, when using 'asleep' we refer to the state of sleep already being achieved.

Regards
