What is the difference between below and under, above and over?

Dear student,

Below' implies 'at a position lower than' something. It does not mean something covered by another thing or immediately 'under' another thing.
For example: Many Indians are below the poverty line.
'Below' is specifically used for temperature or height references.
For example: When it snowed, the temperature went many degrees below zero.

- 'Under' also means 'at a position directly lower than'. It is used when something is covered by something over it.
For example: I wear a shirt under the sweater.
'Under' also means 'less than/younger than'.
For example: Let us keep the number of members to less than twenty.

Both the words above and over, are used in the sense of ‘higher than’. The main difference lies in the context they are used.
- The term 'over' indicates movement, whereas 'above' indicates that something is physically higher than something else.
For example, 'a chopper flew over a city' and 'a chopper is above a city' have two different meaning.
'A chopper flew over a city' indicates that the chopper flew from one side of the city to the other side whereas ‘above the city’ indicates that the chopper was in the air higher than the city.

Generally under is used more widely than below and if there is some concern as to which word to use the safe choice is under
As prepositions, both over and above can mean "at or to a place that is higher than someone or something," but over is somewhat more common
