What is the difference between bhramaputra and Ganga basin?

Dear Student,

 It is important to note that both rivers form the largest basin that is the Ganga Brahmaputra basin and that they consist of Ganges and Brahmaputra collectively,there is no difference between the two. The difference is in the rivers , their origin , source and tributaries. You may refer the following features:


a. The Ganga  Brahmaputra basin in India lies in the sub tropical region 
b. Its important tributaries of River Ganga are Son, Chambal, Gandak, Kosi etc
c. The Ganga- Brahmaputra basin is made up of the plains of Ganga and Brahmaputra, foothills of the Himalayas and the Sundarbans delta. 
d.  The plains are most suitable for human occupation as they have fertile lands that are drained by rivers. 
e. Large part of agricultural activity is done on the fertile plains of the delta, main crops grown there are jute, tea, rice.

f. Besides paddy, jute, wheat , millets, sugarcane,oilseeds are also grown on Ganga Brahmaputra basin.
g. Fishing is also an important activity of the region​.
h. The mountain areas of this region has steep slopes and hence, less number of people reside in the mountain areas of this basin.
i.Many agro based industries have been set up in this region.
j. The abundant food has led to high concentration of population growth of towns and cities.
k. The region is rich in fauna and has  a variety of wildlife which includes elephants, tigers, deer, monkeys etc
l. In the delta area, Bengal tiger, crocodiles, alligator are found.
m. A large variety of fishes of like rohu, catla, hilsa are  found here
n. Some of  the states which are covered in Ganga -Brahmaputra delta are:Uttar Pradesh Madhya Pradesh​ Bihar West Bengal.
o. Main language spoken in this region is Hindi, Bengali.

The Brahmaputra river originates in eastern Tibet where as the Ganges river’s source is in the West by the Tibet/India border and flows south east across India to join the Brahmaputra river in Bangladesh. From here the Ganges-Brahmaputra River flows to the Bay of Bengal where it forms the Ganges Delta.
