What is the difference between by election and general election

Elections that takes place after every five years to elect Lok Sabha or legislative assembly and that are held in all constituencies at the same time, either on the same day or within a few days are called general election.

Election that takes place only for one constituency to fill the vacant seat caused by death or resignation of a member are referred as by-election.

If the government falls before the completion of its term ( five years) that is the lower house stands dissolved, then elections that take place to elect the new Lok Sabha or State Assembly are called as midterm elections.
