 religion are the main ones like hindu, christan ,jain etc

and the subdivisions in them are cast like in hindu its lingayat , maratha. n in jain its digamber and shwetamber

caste means like bramhins,vaishas,shrudrus are the caste.

And religion means like hindu,muslim,etc. are the religion.

Caste is the division seen in relegions like brahmins,vaishas etc.The selection of cast does not depend on individuals. [Except in  some marriages.]

Religion is the division seen in people likehinduism,Islam etc. The selection of relegion depends on Individuals.

  A cast is fixed, you can only change (as I understand it) in very fixed circumstances......... Religion can be chosen at will, and the decision to switch is totally up to you.Religion can be any number of beliefs, Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, etc..........The caste system is that system that seperates people based on how they were born Religion is a way of belief.........Caste is a social status. .......

The difference between caste and religion are as follows :-

1. Caste is differentiation on the basis of the work done by the people. For an example people like bramhins - who know about religious scripts and practices, kshatriyas - were the people who fought in the battles, untouchables who did lower level works etc. are known as castes

2. Religions is a way of worshipping God. It is a large groups of people who follow same religious beliefs and practices. Examples of different religions are Hinduism, Islam, Christianity etc
