What is the difference between common noun and proper noun?

Please specify with examples.

If noun refers to the whole category like rats,humans,etc.,then it is said to be common noun.

If noun specifies a single person, thing, place or animal like Delhi, Ashok, etc., it is said to be proper noun.

a proper noun is used for particular and well known things or people

eg - delhi , ram ( a person you know ) , taj mahal , india etc

whereas a common noun is used for any common person or thing

eg - rat ,postman ,chair etc
