What is the difference between D-sugar and L-sugar?

Dear student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query

A D-sugar has hydroxyl group on the right side of the last stereocenter carbon of the molecule while as the L-sugar has hydroxyl group on the left side last stereocenter carbon of the molecule as shown in the diagram below.

The prefixes D and L are different from d or l which indicate the direction of rotation of plane of polarised light.

Hope this information will clear your doubts about the D sugar and L sugar.

when light is passed through d-sugar(glucose) it bends towards right and in l-sugar(fructose) it bends towards left. this is due to the optical isomerism. also our body can recognise only d-sugar and not l-sugar
